Philip
Pegler was born in Westow, England, and began his study of
Classical Ballet with his mother at the age of five. At 11, Philip
was accepted into the Bush-Davies School in Sussex, where he trained
until the School’s closure in 1989. Following training at The
Vaganova Choreographic Institute (The Kirov Academy) in Russia, he
joined the Legat School of Russian Ballet before being awarded an international
scholarship to study at The Harid Conservatory in Florida.
In 1991, Philip
returned to England and was offered a place at The Royal Ballet School in London.
He joined the School’s Teachers Training Course in 1992 and graduated in
1995 as Head Student.
Although he
danced briefly with the Columbia City Ballet in South Carolina, Philip has dedicated
his career to the training of students in Classical Ballet. In 1996 he assumed
the position of Artistic Director of the South Carolina Dance Theatre before
joining the Calvert-Brodie School as Director in 1998. In 2002, Philip was appointed,
for one year, to the position of Assistant Professor in the College of Theatre
and Dance at the University of Florida, teaching Classical Ballet and lecturing
in Dance History.
Since 2003,
Philip has worked primarily as a freelance Classical Ballet teacher, working
with pre-professional dancers and student-teachers and has given many lectures
and seminars on the anatomical process in Classical Ballet technique. In 2005,
Philip was appointed to the Board of Vocational Examiners of the Royal Academy
of Dance and has examined students throughout the United States, Canada, Brasil,
Italy and the United Kingdom.
With
30 years of Classical Ballet experience, Philip now teaches full-time at
Young Dancers Academy in London, the Elmhurst School for Dance in Birmingham,
and at Eton College in Berkshire.
